Ben Cooper (Rubies) Superman costume (2022)

In homage to the Ben Cooper costumes from the childhoods of several generations, Rubies released an adult sized version of our beloved DC Comics superhero costumes. This Superman costume falls under the one-size-fits-most category. The “costume” is unlike those that we are all familiar with from our collective childhood and is more like a poncho without a hood. It comes with a detachable cape (which is fastened by two tiny squares of velcro) and a face mask reminiscent of the one from the mid-1970s to 1980s version of the costume.

Rubie’s Superman Mask (1993)

This Superman Mask was produced by Rubie’s Costume Co. in 1993. I bought it back then specifically because it was very reminiscent of the masks that came with the Ben Cooper costumes beginning in the mid-1970s. Those facial masks were added to the costumes after Ben Cooper’s very long run of, instead, including a red domino mask as it was in this costume from 1970 and the one I wore proudly as a child.

Ben Cooper Superman costume (1970)

This is the 1970 version of the Ben Cooper Superman costume with its original box. The costume features flame retardant materials and comes with a vinyl cape and plastic “domino” mask. It’s amazing to me that these costumes cost only $2.96 at the time. This version of the costume continued to be sold through the early 1970s until they revised the costume’s material and included a face mask instead of the domino mask.
